Our X51 survey – the results

The survey demonstrates substantial public support for more frequent bus services between Bridport and Dorchester, with a significant proportion of respondents indicating that they would use the X51 more frequently if improvements were introduced.

These findings provide a strong case for further consideration of increased service frequency and extended operating hours.

The headline results:

  • 687 – survey responses
  • 97.2% – want an improved X51 bus service
  • 94.2% – would use it more frequently if improved

The responses indicate that service frequency, journey timings and the lack of evening services are the principal barriers to increased X51 usage among survey participants. Relatively few respondents identified a preference for car travel or concerns about onboard comfort. We believe this makes the case that improvements to the X51 timetable could encourage greater use of public transport. Dorset Council itself has identified the X51 as West Dorset’s primary core route.

Our recommendations:

  • Introduce an hourly X51 service between Bridport and Dorchester throughout the day.
  • Extend evening services, with the last departures no earlier than 21:00 and consideration of services until 22:00 or later.
  • Improve connections at Dorchester South railway station, particularly for evening arrivals.
  • Investigate the feasibility of Sunday services.
